About the Photographer

Gerard Malanga was born in the Bronx in 1943. An accomplished poet, filmmaker, and photographer, his first monograph, Resistance to Memory , appeared in 1998 with an introductory essay by Ben Maddow, and a poem by Thurston Moore, followed by Screen Tests Portraits Nudes 1964-1996 (2000), Someone’s Life (2009), Souls (2010), Ghostly Berms (2012) and Photobooths (2013). Malanga was one of the leading creative geniuses of the avant-garde New York scene during the 1960s and 1970s, most noted for his photography, poetry, and filmmaking. He was deeply associated with Andy Warhol during the factory years at the height of the 60s underground. Time Magazine called him (Warhol’s) most important associate.

Gerard Malanga's photography has been sought after by publishers worldwide and by collectors of discriminating taste for over thirty years. The strength of his archive is primarily in the uniqueness of the image as well as the ephemeral shot.
